FAQ

People have many many (sometimes odd) ideas about hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

Here is a , we've compiled a list of frequently asked questions. If you do not find an answer to your question here, just give me a call...

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind we all drift into several times a day. It’s simply a narrowing of attention, to the exclusion of external stimulus. Have you ever been absorbed in a book and not heard someone call you? Have you ever found yourself daydreaming and lost all track of time? Believe it or not, that’s a form of hypnosis...A hypnotic state is just deep relaxation, with focused attention. Patients are not asleep, just completely relaxed. They are actually in a heightened state of awareness (for example, the senses of smell and hearing are enhanced).

Hypnosis is a natural, normal state of mind that can be used to instruct and direct your unconscious. In hypnosis, the conscious (thinking) part of your mind is completely relaxed. This allows your unconscious mind to become more active, which means you can address phobias, bad habits or other concerns at their root.

Hypnosis is a powerful tool for making positive changes in your life. There is nothing weird or magical about hypnosis. It is safe and natural, because all it does is relax you deeply into a state of mind in which you can deal with any problem.Or arrived at a familiar destination and suddenly realised that you don’t remember much about the drive there? These are examples of common, every day trance states. There is no universal ‘hypnotised feeling’, because everyone’s experience of hypnosis is different.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy uses the natural state of hypnosis to help you make the changes you want. By understanding how our minds work, I can guide you into a deeper level of hypnosis than the examples above. In this relaxed state amazing changes can occur. Most people find the experience very calming and relaxing, giving them a sense of peace, comfort and well-being.

Is it like Stage Hypnosis?

Solution Focused hypnotherapy and psychotherapy are  both gentle enjoyable techniques delivering amazing  and sometimes unexpected benefits. Don’t worry - it’s nothing like stage hypnosis.

How will I feel?

You will feel wonderfully relaxed. You will be aware of everything, including my voice, but you will also be very inwardly-focussed. When you come out of hypnosis you will feel wonderfully refreshed, almost as if you have had a massage.

Will I still be in control?

Yes, absolutely. I cannot make you don’t anything you don’t want to. You enter hypnosis by choice and will be able to reject any suggestions you don’t agree with. You cannot get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis – just as you enter hypnosis by choice, you can come out of it by choice at any time. However, hypnosis is such a pleasant experience that you’ll want to stay in!

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Yes, in the hands of a qualified, professional hypnotherapist, hypnosis is completely safe.

How many sessions will I need?

Some problems can be dealt with in one or two sessions. Others may take a few more. In your first session we will agree a goal for your therapy and I will let you know how many sessions I think it could take. One thing is for certain, you should see improvements after every session. I also guarantee you’ll leave each session feeling better than when you walked in!
